How Do I Prepare For My Next Role – Before I Land It?

The workforce is ever-changing. Some jobs have become obsolete and new unforeseen ones are created right before our eyes. Many feel as though their current position is unpredictable or unstable, and some want to try for a higher or different role that may be out of reach for the moment. You can’t make a job feel more stable just by willing it to be.  And we can’t always have something that we want exactly when we want it.  So, what can you do to prepare for a different future at work? What do you do before you take a leap?

There are many things you can do to prepare for your future work before you land it or make it happen. Some of these include:

  • Refine your soft skills and natural talents (we’re never done – keep working on you)
  • Stay inquisitive and willing to learn (open-mindedness takes practice)
  • Make lists – of what you love, what you are doing at work that doesn’t feel like work (these short insights will often inspire what’s next)
  • Become more flexible to working practices (the way we do work is always changing)
  • Develop your cultural intelligence (because becoming a ‘global citizen’ is a thing).
  • increase your cultural intelligence and open your mind to the different cultural practices and how they manifest in the work environment.
  • Be willing to take a leap of faith when different opportunities present themselves (you can’t always predict your future roles, no matter how hard you try)
  • Research growth trends (Find out how responsibilities differ or change as roles become more managerial or leadership based)
  • Search for new potential employers (don’t let anyone put baby in the corner)
  • Evaluate your personal brand
  • Learn how to network (it often is – who you know)
  • Find your confidence (Confidence is key, you need to be confident in your ability)

There are many other ways you can prepare for your next job role, whether it will be the CEO of your own company or the next big step up the corporate ladder. Whenever you are considering the next big thing for you, be that going off on your own, switching careers, or moving on up, always be sure to prepare for uncertainty. It is the one thing you can count on.
